Rest as a Performance Strategy

The evidence on recovery is not soft. Capacity is built in the space between efforts.
Recovery is often treated as the absence of work. The research treats it as the mechanism by which work becomes repeatable.
Capacity is the constraint
Sustained performance is limited less by ambition than by the physical and emotional capacity available to carry it. When capacity falls, judgment narrows first — long before output visibly declines.
What recovery actually restores
- Attention. The ability to hold a complex problem long enough to solve it.
- Regulation. The steadiness that lets you respond rather than react.
- Perspective. The capacity to tell the urgent from the important.
The practical implication
Treat rest the way you treat any other input to performance: deliberately, in advance, and with a clear sense of what it is for. It is not the reward for the work. It is part of how the work gets done.
